Executive Summary

EcoHighland-Tech (eHt) is a comprehensive initiative for the conservation and sustainable use of high Andean ecosystems in Ecuador. The project is structured around three pillars: eHt-Insights (biotechnology), eHt-Llacta (science-territory connection), and eHt-Seeds (environmental education). Its initial phase, eHt-Microverse , studies native microorganisms in five strategic páramos (high-altitude Andean ecosystems) to develop three innovations: livestock probiotics that improve rumen health, biofertilizers that optimize nutrient absorption, and bacterial consortia to restore soils degraded by forest fires.

The methodology combines advanced scientific research with co-research and social validation processes in collaboration with local communities. Through molecular analysis and field prototyping, eHt seeks not only to generate technical solutions but also to build local capacities and a bank of biotechnological resources. Ultimately, the project aims to establish a replicable ecosystem management model that promotes territorial empowerment, biodiversity, and the well-being of high Andean communities.
