Resumen ejecutivo
As ecosystem engineers, termites play a crucial role in soil structure and nutrient cycling in tropical ecosystems. However, their diversity and evolutionary biology are understudied in Ecuador. This project investigates termite diversity, distribution, and ecological traits through evolutionary and biogeographical approaches. Using morpho-anatomical and molecular tools, including whole-genome sequencing and wide genome searching, it aims to: i) Create Ecuador’s most comprehensive termite collection (CoTerEcu); ii) Update species richness and distribution data for the global termite catalog; iii) Assess how geographical barriers like the Andes Mountains influence dispersal and population dynamics. By integrating cutting-edge research methods and fostering international collaboration, this study enhances Ecuador’s biodiversity conservation efforts and advances termite evolutionary research.
