Resumen ejecutivo

Ecuador's exceptional biodiversity, spanning the Andes, Amazon, and coast, combined with indigenous knowledge, offers a unique opportunity to explore medicinal plants for pharmacological applications. However, much of this biodiversity remains underexplored. This project, a collaboration between the University of Azuay (Ecuador) and Masaryk University (Czech Republic), aims to integrate phytochemistry, pharmacology, and sustainable business practices to study traditional Ecuadorian medicinal plants and develop phytopharmaceuticals.

The initiative has two phases: the first focuses on studying the phytochemical composition and pharmacological properties of these plants, funded by participating universities. The second phase aims to establish a sustainable business model through a company limited by guarantee to produce and market phytopharmaceuticals. To ensure long-term sustainability, the project will seek additional funding from organizations such as the Czech Science Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Erasmus, leveraging scientific data and capacity-building efforts for a broader impact.
